The Weather

Being from the Midwest, there are certain things that I have accepted. Namely, the fact that weather IS a big topic and winters can be unpleasant. It's near the end of February and winter has worn me down. There, I admitted it.

Today I was in the whirlpool at the recreation center after my aquajog where the topic of weather turned into a bonding session. Seems I'm not the only one worn down from this winter. We discussed what a joyous reprieve today's temperature of 25 degrees and NO SNOW or ICE PELLETS has been. Just warmth and sun. You realize how cold it's been when 25 degrees is seen as warm.

A few weeks ago I was driving back from Des Moines on I-80. Around mile marker 236 traffic rolled along slowly over the ice ridges and patches that were in full succession for 5 miles. It took close to an hour. I was listening to NPR and hearing about the awful tornadoes that devasted another part of the country. It put my hour long slow drive in perspective.

People talk about the heartiness and work ethic that we have in the Midwest. My theory is that it is from dealing with the range of the four seasons. Come this summer, we'll worry about heatstroke on July 4th.
